This course examines how the science of geology has been depicted in movies from 1902 to present. It examines social stereotypes that are reinforced, and sometimes challenged by these movies. The technical accuracy of the story lines in the movies are examined in terms of current and historic geologic theories. This is a course of the history of film, as well as a history of the earth and planetary sciences.
This course is presented in discussion/seminar format. Each lesson, a student will be assigned one or more movies for review and discussion. Each student presentation will be due 24 hours before the class zoom session and will be made part of those sessions.
