This trip examines the geology of the eastern Cuyama Valley, the Coast Ranges and Carpenteria. Between Bakersfield and the coast, we make stops at the fault scarp of the 1857 Ft. Tejon Earthquake on the San Andreas Fault at Camp Dix, and go through archaeological sites on the way to the scenic biota stops in Santa Barbara Canyon. After going over the Sierra Madre, we stop for lunch at Wheeler Hot Springs. The day ends at Carpenteria state beach where we learn about historic tar bed mining along the beach, oil seeps and paleontological and archaeological sites at the park. There is an entrance fee for day use at the state beach.
